If you’re thinking about joining a ride with Calpe Cycling Club, you’re in good company. Whether you’re staying in Calpe for a cycling holiday or living here full-time, the club offers a friendly, structured way to enjoy the roads of the Costa Blanca in good company. Here’s everything you need to know before your first ride.
Meeting Point and Timing
All our rides start at the Blanca Bikes café in central Calpe, located at Carrer Blasco Ibáñez, 25. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the advertised start time, giving you chance to grab a coffee, meet the ride leaders, and chat with fellow riders.
The café is cycling-friendly with space to leave your bike while you get sorted. It’s also the base of Blanca Bikes, our bike hire partner, so if you’re hiring a Cervélo bike, it’s easy to get fitted and ready before you roll out.
Ride Structure and Route
We typically ride 30–40 miles (50–65 km) at a steady group pace. Expect rolling terrain with some climbing, but nothing too intense unless otherwise stated. Longer “away days” are announced in advance for those who fancy more of a challenge.
The route is shared before the ride and is always led by an experienced ride leader. They’ll keep the group together and ensure no one is left behind. The emphasis is on safe, sociable riding rather than racing.
Pace and Group Riding
Our rides generally suit cyclists comfortable with a pace of 14–16 mph (22–25 km/h) on flat to rolling roads. It’s important that you’re able to ride this distance with confidence, though you don’t need to be a racing cyclist to join. Group riding is a skill, and we welcome riders of all backgrounds – just be prepared to follow signals, call out hazards, and ride predictably. If you’re unsure about the etiquette, don’t worry – our ride leaders will offer guidance.
What to Bring
Bring a roadworthy bike, preferably a road or gravel bike. If you’re hiring, book in advance through Blanca Bikes to avoid disappointment.
You’ll also need:
- Helmet (mandatory)
- Two water bottles
- Basic spares (inner tube, tyre levers, pump or CO₂)
- Some money for the café stop
- Appropriate clothing for the weather
If it’s your first time riding in Spain, remember the roads can get hot even early in the morning – sun protection and hydration are key.
Café Stop and Social Side
Most rides include a mid-ride stop at a local café – sometimes for a quick espresso, sometimes for a sandwich or sweet pastry. This is a chance to refuel and chat with others.
After the ride, many riders return to Blanca Bikes café for a cold drink or light lunch. It’s a good opportunity to ask questions about future rides, share route tips, or simply enjoy the post-ride buzz.
Insurance and Registration
There’s no formal membership process or fee, but we do suggest all riders to register before joining a ride. You can do this online or at the café.
We also recommend you have cycling insurance. For UK visitors, British Cycling or Cycling UK provide suitable cover. Residents in Spain may already have coverage through their federation licence- it’s your responsibility to select the best insurance cover for your needs as the club take no responsibility regarding liability or insurance of club riders and their equipment
Final Thoughts
Joining Calpe Cycling Club is an easy, low-pressure way to meet other cyclists and enjoy the roads around Calpe. If you’re visiting the area, it’s a great way to make the most of your trip. If you live here, it’s a regular chance to ride with others and explore new routes.
